Guildford is the county town, retaining its traditional cobbled high street and riverside walks, but offering all the richness and amenities of a city, with excellent shopping and entertainment. Guided walks of the town offer an insight into the fascinating history of the area, taking in the castle keep, the 15th-century Guildhall and a wealth of other historic buildings.
The Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty encompasses much of the surrounding countryside, which is dotted with picturesque villages and a wealth of gardens and houses to visit. Guildford’s attractions range from the 240 acre garden at Wisley to the 20th-century cathedral just outside the town and many are linked by the North Downs Way national trail.

Hampton Court Palace, East Molesey, Surrey
Hampton Court Palace, Henry VIII's riverside home, commands an unrivalled
location. The palace is set in magnificent gardens, including fountain,
wilderness, knot and rose gardens and a laburnum walk. The famous maze must be
seen as should the Great Vine, planted in 1768. The recently restored formal
privy garden of King William III is splendid, as are the clipped yews and
displays of 17thcentury plants. Quite simply a must.
Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Richmond, Surrey
Kew is internationally renowned for collecting, conserving and exchanging plants from all over the world. Kew houses over 35,000 species, including hundreds of threatened plants in delightful, varied gardens of over 300 acres. The gardens also incorporate the famous Palm House, Princess of Wales Conservatory, rock garden, grass garden, trees, temples and a lake.
Ham House, Richmond, Surrey
The formal 17th century garden lies within the grounds of this grand historic house, in a beautiful setting on the river Thames. The gardens contain a strong framework of wide gravel terraces, lawns intersected by paths, parterres of box and lavender, clipped yews and a shrubbery. Be sure not to miss the cut-flower border of period plants and the 17th century orangery.
Savill Garden & Valley Gardens, Englefield Green, Surrey
From Cliveden travel south into Surrey. Savill offers superb woodland gardens of year-round interest. The gardens shelter an outstanding collection of rhododendrons, camellias, magnolias and hydrangeas, plus collections of ferns hostas and primulas, herbaceous borders and roses. The Valley Gardens offer massed spring and autumn colour with canopies of exotic shrubs and trees, as well as a lake.
RHS Garden Wisley, Wisley, Woking, Surrey
Wisley, the famous garden of the Royal Horticultural Society, is also within Surrey. Covering 250 glorious acres, Wisley shows British gardening at its best. Every garden type is represented, from mixed borders and roses to a wild garden, rock garden and glasshouses, providing inspiration and practical advice to thousands of visitors.
