The city of Ely is rich in history, charm and beauty and is the jewel in the
crown of the Fens. Dominating the skyline is one of the England’s most
beautiful and largest cathedrals. Known locally as the ‘Ship of the Fens’,
the cathedral is also home to the only national museum dedicated to stained
glass.
Ely’s most famous resident and former MP, Oliver Cromwell, lived in Ely for many years before becoming Lord Protector of England. His home is open to the public throughout the year and visitors can learn more about him in specially restored rooms and exhibits about 17th-century life. The house also houses the local tourist information centre. The city has a splendid array of historic buildings with a beautiful waterside area where you can enjoy a boat trip, riverside walk or explore the many cafes and antiques shops. Twelve miles from Cambridge, Ely is the perfect base to explore the local area. The district is home to the July Racecourse at Newmarket, the home of horse racing. See the former race horses on a tour of The National Stud. Wicken Fen, owned and maintained by the National Trust, is the most ancient fenland reserve in the country. The Trust also manages Anglesey Abbey, famous for its beautiful gardens. Must see and do
