Lambourn - a centre for racehorse training

For fine eateries, picturesque countryside and fascinating heritage you have to go a long way to beat West Berkshire. The region is just over an hour’s drive from London, Bristol and Oxford and the rail and road links are excellent.

There are many towns and villages to delve into, the biggest, Newbury, has a bustling high street, interesting shops and lively cafes and restaurants.

Opportunities for those interested in the great outdoors are aplenty; there is the Ridgeway National Path and Walbury Hill, near Inkpen is the highest chalk hill in England. A more leisurely stroll can be enjoyed alongside the Kennet and Avon Canal or the Thames. There’s also the Newbury Racecourse, fitness clubs, swimming pools and golf courses.

The region’s Heritage is of great interest. Donnington Castle saw much action during the civil wars of 1643 and 1644. Today all that is left is the gatehouse but visitors are still attracted by the views. Basildon Park near Pangbourne is noted for its detailed plasterwork, magnificent staircase and unusual shell room.

A range or accommodation to suit you is available.
